Desire Excavation: The Shadow Alchemy Practice of Asking “What Do You Want?”
One of the most powerful questions in Shadow Alchemy is also one of the simplest:
What do you want?
Not what do you not want.
Not what should you want.
Not what is spiritually acceptable to want.
What do you actually want?
Teaching Call 5 introduces a central Penetrate practice: desire excavation, the art of digging desire out of another person (and out of yourself) with clarity, curiosity, and embodied presence. t5
This is Existential Kink (EK) applied to the most honest material there is:
Desire.
Why Desire Is the Center of Everything
So many people can speak endlessly about what they don’t want:
“I don’t want to be anxious.”
“I don’t want this relationship dynamic.”
“I don’t want to feel stuck.”
But knowing what you don’t want sheds almost no light on what you truly want.
Shadow Alchemy trains the opposite orientation:
Desire as truth.
Desire as compass.
Desire as the doorway into unconscious charge.
What Is Desire Excavation?
Desire excavation is a relational practice.
One person asks, again and again, in varied ways:
What do you want?
What would you like?
What are you craving?
What are you into?
How do you want to feel?
And the other person answers.
The questioner does something deceptively simple:
They repeat it back.
“You want more energy.”
Then they ask again.
And again.
The goal is not speed.
The goal is depth.
Desire clarifies in layers. t5
The Hidden Power: Curiosity Is Seduction
One of the most penetrating energies in coaching is genuine curiosity.
When you desire to know what another human wants, you become magnetic.
You become present.
Desire excavation is not interrogation.
It is attention.
It is erotic listening.
It is the practice of treating desire as sacred data.
The Final Move: “So What You Really Want Is…”
At the end of the excavation, the questioner offers a distilled naming:
“So what you really want is…”
This might be:
a broader umbrella of what’s been said
or the unspoken desire underneath it
Then the receiver gives feedback on a scale of 1–10:
How much did that naming “slap”?
This is a training in clarity, intuition, and courageous truth-telling. t5
A Key Coaching Truth: People Don’t Always Know What They Want
Sometimes the first answer is conceptual:
“I want freedom.”
“I want flow.”
A powerful follow-up is:
How will you know when you have that?
What will be different internally?
What will change in perception, reaction, and lived experience?
Shadow Alchemy is often about inner results, not just external goals. t5
Desire Excavation and Existential Kink
Under the banner of Existential Kink, desire becomes even more interesting.
Because sometimes what people “want” is not the obvious thing.
Sometimes they want:
the experience of not having
the pleasure of rejecting
the charge of dissatisfaction
the taboo of longing
Desire excavation helps illuminate both conscious and unconscious desire.
It makes the shadow speak clearly.
Why This Matters for Coaches (and for Sales)
Lucy makes a crucial point:
Desire excavation is not only a coaching tool.
It is also an ethical sales tool.
How can you offer someone a transformation if you don’t know what they want?
When you excavate desire, you can:
serve accurately
pitch cleanly
avoid projection
stop hallucinating what the client needs
Coaching and selling are deeply related:
You cannot sell someone something they do not want. t5
A Simple Desire Excavation Practice You Can Try Today
Pick one prompt and set a timer for five minutes:
What do I want right now?
What do I secretly desire?
What do I want to feel?
What do I want more of?
Write fast. No censorship.
Then ask:
What is the channel through which this desire could be fulfilled?
Desire becomes real when it becomes specific.

Frequently Asked Questions (Desire Excavation)
What is desire excavation?
A Shadow Alchemy practice of repeatedly asking “What do you want?” and reflecting desire back until it becomes specific and embodied.
Is this part of Existential Kink?
Yes. EK is about radical honesty with unconscious charge. Desire excavation is a direct way to surface that charge.
Why repeat back what someone says?
Reflection creates clarity and safety. It helps desire sharpen through layers.
How is this useful in coaching?
Because coaching is serving desire. You cannot help or sell without knowing what the person actually wants.
